Resources and Further Reading

While writing my book, Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake, I realised because information about funerals and wakes is constantly changing and being updated, rather than printing a list of resources and further reading at the back of this book, it made sense to create a Resources and Further Reading Page here on my website instead.

I will keep updating and adding websites and other resources to this page to help you with your end of life planning, or organising a celebration of life, a funeral or a wake.

What you need to organise before you die

This Australian Government website outlines what you need to do before you die to relieve the burden off your family.

Advance Care Directives, Enduring Guardianship and Advance Care Plans

Each State and Territory has their own laws and plans but this Australian Government funded website brings all the information you need together in one place:

https://www.advancecareplanning.org.au/

Their website includes a link for each State and Territory in Australia and information on how to create your own Advanced Care Plan and appoint an Enduring Guardian.

Wills and Powers of Attorney

You can use a solicitor, a community legal centre, an online site (see information below) or your state’s Public Trustee to draft your will.

Requirements vary between each State and Territory so check with the Public Trustee in your state or territory to understand the requirements that apply to your state.

Writing and storing a Will

There are now many online options for writing and storing your Will. Your State Government’s Public Trustee will offer this option (see list above for your State or Territory) and here are some private alternatives.

What to do when someone dies

The Australian Death Notification Service is a government website that allows you to notify multiple organisations at the same time and online when someone has died so their accounts can be closed or transferred.

Here is the list of organisations you can use this website to notify.

The Australian Government’s Services Australia website also has comprehensive information and resources on what to do when someone dies.
